Why commercial & industrial properties?
It’s estimated that nearly 40 billion square feet of rooftop and parking lot space in the U.S. real estate industry is available and suitable for solar. If solar arrays were deployed on all of those real estate assets, it would have the potential to generate over 25% of the total electricity consumed by commercial properties in the U.S. That’s the equivalent to reducing the CO2 emissions from 275 billion pounds of coal burned each year!
In addition to the large potential for impact, there are several other advantages to installing solar on commercial & industrial buildings. C&I properties typically have large, flat, empty rooftops that make them well-suited for solar because they can generate large amounts of electricity. Furthermore, with options like rooftop community solar – where C&I property owners host solar on their roof or parking lot in exchange for a lease payment – no tenant approval is required, leading to a simple process that’s a win-win for the host, project subscribers, and broader community.
