Why is mid-sized commercial real estate finally going solar? In an interview with pv magazine, Aspen Power’s John Lind broke down how the rise of community solar is transforming a historically challenging market segment.

For years, short lease terms and tenant turnover made rooftop solar a tough sell for landlords. But now in markets where community solar is available, CRE owners can now maximize their rooftops and sell power off-site, bypassing those hurdles and unlocking a new revenue stream.

“Instead of just building a 500-kilowatt system to meet the site’s energy consumption, I can max out the space with a five-megawatt system and sell it back for revenue to community subscribers—and in turn pay the building owner rent.”
